CHAPTER SEVEN

“I think Brigitte needs to go home and rest for a while,” Officer Cates said.

“Yeah, well, I think she needs to be checked out by a doctor,” Pauline insisted. She was seated in the back of the officer’s golf cart next to Brigitte. Loretta sat next to Officer Cates in the front with her body turned around to face the women in the back.

“I think you’ll be lucky to find an ambulance anywhere close to here right now,” Loretta said. “It sounds like some other areas were hit a little bit harder than we were by the storm.”

“If you want to drive into Sunshine Falls to an urgent care center or to the hospital, I can certainly understand,” the officer continued. “But I was a paramedic before I took this job here. I am more than happy to check her out again.”

“Why don’t you do that, Officer Cates,” Loretta suggested. “If you can reassure us that she’s okay, I think going home for a good rest will be sufficient.”

“Why didn’t you say you were a paramedic?” Pauline muttered.

Officer Cates ignored Pauline’s grumblings. She turned off the golf cart engine and walked to the back. She pulled a pen light out of her uniform pocket and checked Brigitte over again. “Are you dizzy or lightheaded, Mrs. Waldorf?” she asked.

Brigitte shook her head.

“Let’s go back to your place,” Pauline said. “But I’m not leaving your side.”

“That’s a good idea,” Loretta said. “You stay with her for a while, and I’ll continue looking around for Sally and some of your things.”

“You should go by the clubhouse while you’re at it,” Pauline said.

“I will,” Loretta promised. She waited as the police officer returned to her seat and started the golf cart up again. They headed around to the other side of the lake. Officer Cates skillfully avoided the downed tree limbs in the road as she drove.

“What do you know about Sally?” Officer Cates asked as soon as Pauline and Brigitte were safely back at Brigitte’s house.

“Honestly, not that much,” Loretta admitted. “I just met Sally and her daughter Dara last night at the hurricane watch party, just like I met you today for the first time.”

“Point taken.” Officer Cates chuckled. “I just wondered if you might have any insight to where she might be right now.”

Loretta shook her head. “I have no idea where she might have gone,” she said. “But Harold, I mean Chief Hargraves, and her daughter are out looking for her along with the former community manager, Kelly Crenshaw.”

“What about Rachel?” Officer Cates asked. “I met her once when she started to interview me for my position with the department, but she ducked out of the interview pretty quickly.”

“I think the chief and the sheriff’s department have a good handle on the investigation into Rachel’s whereabouts,” Loretta said. “Don’t you think we ought to
